News from EPI Media advisory: Trade experts to discuss new data showing 3.7 million U.S. jobs lost to China

On Thursday, January 30, at 10:30 a.m. Eastern, the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) and Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) will hold a press call to discuss their new report showing that growing trade deficits with China have eliminated 3.7 million U.S. jobs between 2001 and 2018, including in every state and congressional district. Although President Trump has claimed that tariffs and other restrictions imposed on China trade will bring jobs back, the bilateral trade deficit continued to grow between 2016 and 2018, resulting in the loss of more than 700,000 U.S. jobs.

EPI and AAM will discuss job losses by state, congressional district, and industry and how the U.S.–China “phase one” trade deal fails to address the key structural concerns—particularly China’s history of currency manipulation and dollar misalignment—with the long-term trade imbalance. The report will be embargoed until the press call.
