The State and Regional Employment report for August, released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, shows nearly every state added jobs last month, but the unemployment rate fell in less than half of the states.
“For a full recovery, states need to not just add jobs, but also lower their unemployment rate and bring more workers in off the sidelines,” said Economic Analyst Janelle Jones. “Policymakers at the state and national level should not take their foot off the brakes until the recovery reaches working people in every state and every corner of the labor market.”
From May to August, 45 states and the District of Columbia added jobs, with New Hampshire (1.4 percent), Maryland (1.2 percent), Nevada (1.2 percent), Oklahoma (1.0 percent), and Georgia (0.9 percent) making the largest percentage job gains. Over that same period, employment fell in only four states: Wyoming (-0.7 percent), Kansas (-0.4 percent), Wisconsin (-0.3 percent), and South Dakota (0.1 percent). In Connecticut and Louisiana, the number of jobs was essentially unchanged.
From May to August, unemployment fell in 21 states. Alabama (-0.7 percent), Tennessee (-0.7 percent), Texas (-0.6 percent), and Louisiana (-0.5 percent), and North Carolina (-0.4 percent) saw the largest declines in unemployment rates. Over the same months, the unemployment rate increased in 26 states and the District of Columbia. The largest increases in unemployment occurred in Maine (0.6 percent), Alaska (0.5 percent), Ohio (0.5 percent), Oregon (0.5 percent), and West Virginia (0.5 percent). In Massachusetts, Montana, and Virginia, there was no change in the unemployment rate.
