The State and Regional Employment report for November, released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, shows state economies continuing on their slow march to a full recovery. A majority of states added jobs while 19 states saw either an increases or no change in their unemployment rates.
From August to November, 36 states added jobs, with Idaho (1.0 percent), Utah (1.0 percent), California (0.9 percent), Texas (0.9 percent), and South Carolina (0.8 percent) making the largest percentage gains. Over that same period, employment fell in 14 states and the District of Columbia, down from 18 states in last month’s report. The largest job losses occurred in Alaska (-1.4 percent), North Dakota (-1.2 percent), Wyoming (-1.0 percent), Connecticut (-0.6 percent), and Delaware (-0.6 percent).
From August to November, unemployment rates fell in 31 states. Kentucky (-0.8 percentage points), Alabama (-0.7 percentage points), Arizona (-0.7 percentage points), Minnesota (-0.7 percentage points), and Ohio (-0.6 percentage points) saw the largest declines in unemployment. Over the same months, the unemployment rate increased in 13 states. The largest increases in unemployment rates occurred in Michigan (0.7 percentage points), New Jersey (0.6 percentage points), and Colorado (0.5 percentage points). In six states and the District of Columbia there was no change in the unemployment: Alaska, Idaho, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and South Carolina.
“While the national unemployment rate is trending in a good direction, today’s data shows that many states are still experiencing higher unemployment than we’d expect this far along in the recovery, “ said Janelle Jones, EPI Economic Analyst. “In order to help working people succeed across the country, policymakers should prioritize a full employment agenda.”
