Jump-Starting America with Simon Johnson

Date: June 3, 2019

EPI is pleased to welcome Simon Johnson, Ronald A. Kurtz Professor of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management and former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund, as he presents and discusses his new book, Jump-Starting America.

Co-authored with MIT colleague Jonathan Gruber, the book argues for shifting the mix of public investments in the economy toward science and technology in ways that could generate faster economic growth and better employment opportunities. In particular, Gruber and Johnson call for an “innovation dividend” that would literally be paid out to American households as those investments pay off.

Johnson, also a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, will discuss how his plan would work and whether the political system is ready for such a leap. His remarks will be followed by a conversation with EPI President Thea Lee and questions from the audience. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
